Indiana’s online university presents $2,000 to resident

WESTFIELD — At Monday evening’s Westfield City Council meeting, WGU Indiana presented resident Karen George with a $2,000 scholarship. WGU Indiana and the City of Westfield launched a corporate partnership just one year ago expanding access to higher education for Westfield residents and employees of the City. The innovative agreement includes co-funded scholarships, tuition certificates, and a unique opportunity for community members to engage with Indiana’s online university.

“Partnering with WGU Indiana increases high-quality educational opportunities for our community,” said Mayor Andy Cook. “Scholarships like the one presented today are a prime example of how we can give back to our citizens and encourage educational advancement. I am proud of Karen and what she has been able to achieve with WGU Indiana.”

In March of 2016, Mayor Cook and WGU Indiana Chancellor Allison Barber announced two $2,000 Mayoral Scholarships, available to Westfield residents. In addition to the merit-based awards, ten tuition certificates, valued at $300 apiece, were also be made available to residents and employees of the City of Westfield.

“I am grateful to be one of the first to receive a WGU Indiana City of Westfield scholarship,” said Karen George. “WGU Indiana was the perfect fit for me and this scholarship will go a long way in helping me finish my degree.”

Karen is a resident of Westfield and works as the staff accountant at Alpha Chi Omega Fraternity. She is attending WGU Indiana to achieve her Master's in Business Administration.

“The partnership we have established with the City of Westfield demonstrates what is possible when communities are willing to collaborate, and focus on education,” said WGU Indiana Chancellor Allison Barber. “Thanks to Mayor Cook and the Council, we are able to provide a flexible and affordable solution for Westfield residents looking to attain or advance their degrees.”

WGU Indiana and the City of Westfield renewed their partnership as well, allowing residents the opportunity to apply for scholarships. Westfield residents and city employees can find more information about the partnership at http://indiana.wgu.edu/landing/westfield.
